Concept.
《鎮魂》是藝術家王韶薇長期關注台灣人自我認同的成果，試著突破黨國官定意識形態的框架，重探有別於單一史觀的視點。同時，藝術家亦持續思考：藝術實踐做為社會運動的一環的可能性，並將艱澀乃至苦痛的議題置入公眾視野之中。
在《鎮魂》的系列創作中，藝術家橫跨近四百年的時間，從荷西時期直至解嚴前後，沿途拾起不被納入教科書的台灣史，企圖揭露在地歷史真相。透過藝術做為倡議的一種方式，並以不同的日常物件做為限量版畫的載體與媒介，期待作品不僅能被收藏，更被視為生活的一部分，能夠被穿戴、被善用，因而，擁有作品本身就是參與政治的一種實踐。
藝術家亦相信公眾參與並不只在特定場域發生，而是得在生活中付諸言行，也願我們能成為彼此生命中的燈塔，指出來時的路並非漆黑一片，有多少前人點火先行，因為，剩下的，就是我們的事了。
I am SHAOwei, a Taiwanese designer and illustrator.
"The Theme of Quell the Souls" is a series of art works that depicts Taiwan history.
The main idea of this series surrounds the history of Martial Law and White Terror Period (1949-1987) in Taiwan. I would like to discuss these historical memories via visual narration and how the history of this specific time period influences Taiwanese and the contemporary Taiwanese society. In addition, I expect that more and more Taiwanese will show their interest in transitional justice and the issue of Taiwan independence. The assailants and the history should not be forgotten.

Concept.
〈彩虹橋〉是《鎮魂》系列第一件作品，描繪1930年霧社事件。
引魂使者―信仰彩虹的祖靈之鳥Sisin，啣來寒緋櫻花瓣，置於戰死亡者頭上。花瓣上寫著︰「ハヤクコウサンスルモノハコロサナイ」。（快點投降就不殺你們）
賽德克族經過日本軍隊毒氣鎮壓後，吸入劇毒的痛苦族人們決定結束生命；然而，輕生不符合原住民戰士精神。
即使無法以戰士身分戰死，Sisin依然啣著象徵彩虹的七彩線縷，將族人靈魂牽引至彩虹橋上，成為『真正的人』，意即：賽德克·巴萊（Seediq Bale）。
面對惡意攻擊，你選擇委屈換來充滿恐懼的和平協議、還是為了真正的自由抗爭到底呢？
"Rainbow bridge: Wushe Incident" is the first artwork of "The Theme of Quell the Souls" series. The narration depicts the "Wushe Incident" in 1930 in Taiwan and the film " Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale." The spiritual bird of the ancestor Sisin leads deceased warriors who died in battles onto a rainbow bridge, and the souls of warriors become the real Seediq Bale.

Concept.
〈全元戰鬪〉是《鎮魂》系列第二件作品，描繪1989年鄭南榕與詹益樺自焚。也致意解嚴前後，至今持續為言論自由而奮鬥的所有人與魂。
點 自由的火，捒 時代的輪。1984~1989年，時代自由之火終於燃起。
紀念鄭南榕與詹益樺。
下方的剛烈鳳凰代表南榕，將爭取言論自由的鬥士們向上推升，也象徵前輩們烈焰般的意志。
上方的柔美鳳凰代表益樺，多數鬥士如同益樺般，沉靜又堅毅，讓言論自由之巨輪不停向前推動。
我們因此獲得了許多，但剩下的甚麼，是我們的事呢？

Concept.
〈火燒島〉是《鎮魂》系列第三件作品，描繪1950年代在綠島的政治犯們的故事，也以此作品向電影《超級大國民》致敬。
雙手展開，戰勝驚惶。
進象鼻岩 入鬼門關 生與命 在火燒島定讞。
象頭的側臉隱藏其中，象鼻捲起炸彈後，炸彈向海中墜落，湧起一雙比著2與1的手，意指懲治叛亂條例「二條一」唯一死刑，大浪噴出具具被子彈貫穿的遺體。象徵黨國機器憲兵，正在執行任務，將島上被蓋章定讞的政治犯處決。
『政治犯』是模糊又立體的標籤，若能記得戒嚴時期的他們（與她們）如何、為何成為政治犯，也會清楚中華民國政權對人民刻下的咒，至今（2024年）尚未消除。

Concept.
〈菊水神風〉是《鎮魂》系列第四件作品，向曾以「皇民」身分參與二戰的台灣人致意。
神風 玉碎。思念 片斷，玉音 空轉，完碧 成仁。
新高特別攻擊隊 菊水隊。
1944至1945年的台灣人，是皇民抑或龍的傳人?
獻給曾是皇民的每位勇敢台灣人。
戰士側臉眼神堅定，駕駛名為「隼」的零式戰機，
穿過天空正圓形彩虹，以肉身攻向美軍艦隊。
戰士殞落如同盛開櫻花，肉體即使成為支離破碎的花瓣，也能滋養母土。
即使向殖民政權爭取到平起平坐的資格，台灣人終究無法獲得真正的尊嚴。
日本殖民時代如此，中國國民黨建立的中華民國政權也是。
TAIWAN Japanese colonial-era between 1895 and 1945,
during World War II(1939 to 1945), many Taiwanese participate in a war.
From 1937 to 1945, 126,750 Taiwanese joined and served in the military of the Japanese Empire, while a further 80,433 were conscripted between 1942 and 1945. Of the sum total, 30,304, or 15%, died in Japan's war in Asia.
During Japanese occupation-era (1895-1945) ,anyone who was faithful toward the Japanese emperor.
This artwork is about TAIWAN's Kamikaze unit and crushed gravel.

〈神怒〉是《鎮魂》系列第五件作品，探討「地方勢力」、「民族意識」之間如何互相影響，形成社會體制。
眾神 械鬥。王法家規 民反官逼。
朱一貴、林爽文、戴潮春、
觀音、媽祖、
清水祖師、開漳聖王、
三山國王、五谷神農、
太子爺、王爺公。
當民間信仰成為當權者的統治工具時，人透過操弄神意進而操控族群。
即使如此，信仰開漳聖王與媽祖的我，從不認為人可以操縱神佛。

Concept.
〈刺蔣〉是《鎮魂》系列第六件作品，創作動機起始於「Let me stand up like a Taiwanese」這段話的歷史因果緣起——「刺蔣案」與導致刺蔣的前因後果。
風起雲湧的1970年代，向獨立勇者們致敬。
Let me stand up like a Taiwanese!
1970年4月24日，黃文雄與鄭自才企圖刺殺蔣經國，冀望終結台灣的戒嚴時代。
畫面中央，身著五色旗華服、創立中華民國政權的獨裁者，像是教皇正在宣讀他與黨的誓言。中國國民黨佔領台灣後，對人民土地拆食落腹，獲得豐富滋養。然而無論吃下多少滋養，都被本質痟貪的他們迅速消化掉。
上方高喊「Let me stand up like a Taiwanese! 」的男子，企圖以裝了百合花的槍結束暴政，百合花刺穿獨裁政權的手，於是看似皇權般的戒嚴政權開始崩解…。
面對暴力脅迫生命的當下，為了保護愛人的你，會選擇如何反應呢？

〈共和〉是《鎮魂》系列第七件作品，也向穿越百年、見證台灣過去與未來的的史明前輩致意。
穿越數百年，行過坎坷，起造國家。
最底下的台灣島嶼，乘載千年以上的奇幻故事；
大航海、荷西、清領、日治、中華民國...。
歷代接力傳承與爭奪的船舵，最終由台灣人自己好好地掌握，
天助自助者，神明也會助台灣一臂之力。
與前六件鎮魂作品的調性：「畫回歷史斷片」稍有區別；〈共和〉把創作目標放在未來。強烈希望不久的將來，護照上的英文國名是「Republic of TAIWAN」。

Concept.
〈摩訶迦羅〉是《鎮魂》系列第八件作品，紀錄台灣1970—80年間中國國民黨執政造成的社會動盪事件切片。
神威?人禍? 美麗島。
以風起雲湧的1979年高雄美麗島事件為起始，憤怒的大黑天自盛開的蓮花升起，充滿法器神力的乩童看似要戰鬥，卻被眾多白頭殼企圖覆蓋與包圍；
上方的天使、佛手與聖靈頭骨，淋下對乩童增福的意念，
周圍的神尊引領護持著眾人，看清歷史軌跡，邁向清朗未來。
梵文Mahākāla音讀「摩訶迦羅」，意即大黑天。我以圖博（Tibetan）卷軸畫（唐卡）中常見的大黑天神尊，象徵救怙眾生；盛怒貌的乩童手持法器五寶展現神威，呈現得來不易的民主模樣。我認為「守護民主」是自保也是戰鬥。
Taiwan has never been afraid of failure in its process of democratization. Any time is the best time, so long as we're willing to roll up our sleeves and fight.
